Falling Damage

Thank goodness for having the internet at work, because my power is out.

Yesterday Ohio got hit with a nasty windstorm kicked up from the leftovers of Hurricane Ike. The hot sunniness not usually encountered when you're having 60- and 70-some MPH wind gusts made it seem surreal and initially unthreatening; the actual rain didn't come until the wind was dying down, and even then it wasn't exactly a downpour. I was out playing D&D, making nervous jokes with friends about trees falling on our cars out in front of the house as the lights flickered but never went off for more than a moment. Andrew was at work doing inventory, which was a lot more hampered by the intermittent power than we were sitting around a table near a large window fighting oozes. It wasn't until Andrew got home that he realized our power was out, and not until we finished killing our dragon that I saw all the downed trees and dark traffic lights on the way home. People were already queueing for gas in anticipation of a price hike, and as I pumped gas at the busy station in a city that had otherwise gone dark with the wind still gusting I got that old vaguely post-apocalyptic feeling. Because I'm weird.

The odd thing about Columbus right now is how spotty it is. Traffic lights seem to be taking turns being out. One side of a street will have power and the other won't. Our friends Jordan and James (omg real names) three blocks over have power but no internet. The news is saying it's likely to be out for a couple days for a lot of the city as they move trees around and get lines reconnected. Fortunately the restaurants nearby still seem to have power. Last night Subway had a line nearly out the door, and the Thai place we go to a lot was busy as well. More than anything right now I'm concerned about the lizards, because room temperature is too cold for them to stay for an extended period. Once I get home tonight the iguana at least is getting a warm bath, and I might set up a shower for the chameleon.

But hey, it's a change of pace.
