Assorted Geekery
I realize I have now set myself up to name my puppies after characters from classic cyberpunk novels. So maybe I'll name my next puppy Hiro, but where do you go after William Gibson and Neal Stephenson? And just how geeky is that?
I'm finally getting back online and catching up. I'll probably post a bit over the next couple days between finishing up this quarter's schoolwork. In the meantime, who wants in on the Google Talk action?

Puppy Time!
So here I am, with a puppy. (No, not a real puppy.) I am now the proud virtual owner of a virtual Shetland sheepdog named Molly. Also, the Game Boy Micro continues to sadden me by coming out on my birthday when I'll be broke.
Oh, and I'm in Detroit this weekend.

Woof!
Hee hee. Nintendogs is apparently such a big deal that both Target and Best Buy are doing freebie promotions to get you to buy it from them. Anybody know of any other stores doing that? I'm a sucker for game promo freebies, so I wanna compare.

Back.
Back from Alabama. Fighting with what may be the aftermath of an infestation of chiggers, or may be a combination of that and something more insidious. Two of the bites are either horribly infected or something else entirely, but the ankles seem to be a fairly textbook case. More updates - possibly including photos of interesting lizards and insects - whenever I get a chance.

The universe hates me. :(
The GBA Micro's release date has finally been announced. Here's a hint: It's on my birthday. You'd think that would be exciting and celebratory, like Nintendo's little gift to me, but I'm going to be flat broke just to I can go to BotCon this year, which is the weekend after my birthday, leaving me without one of these precious devices for a good couple weeks after release. It's like a big kick in the shins for my birthday.

Tying Up Loose Ends
On Wednesday I'm leaving for Alabama, where I will have no cable and only the most meager access to the internet (not only dial-up, but hourly dial-up) until I return next Monday, and I have school tomorrow morning and work tomorrow evening, so now I'm gonna post a bunch of stuff I want to get in before I'm cut off from civilization entirely. I really should see if my mom can get me the land-line number for their house there so Steve-o and Walky can call if there's any interesting news...
First off, my cat:
Sometime over the past week or so she turned 18. 18 years ago, for my ninth birthday, I picked her out of the pound as a 4-week-old kitten. I had to leave her with my parents when I moved to Houghton, but when I moved to Columbus I insisted on bringing her with me because it broke my heart to think of her spending her old age being pestered by their dogs, only to finally pass away without me there. Graham was nervous at first to live with such an old cat, but she's in remarkably good health for a cat her age, and while her sight isn't what it was, she has no serious or chronic health problems. I think she's got a couple birthdays in her yet.
Secondly, teh sexy Xevoz:
Rune Slayer has a beefy new friend! Hyper Guardian apparently went back up for order one day when I was off somewhere, and Graham ordered him for me as a surprise. Envy me and my Xevoz!
Thirdly, Master Collectors has put up a much-awaited preview for their Deathsaurus figure. You can probably count the number of people in this fandom who actually really, truly care about Deathsaurus on one hand, and I would be the index finger. I give him an "Eh". The head tries, and it's got the beaky visor bit, but I think there must have been something about the engineering that killed it. The details are there, but the feel is wrong. It's odd, I can accept stuff like Alternators and other reimaginings of the Holy Immortal Early G1 characters, but I like my Victory left just the way it was.
I wanted to be all hip and add a list of what I'm taking to entertain myself in Alabama, but that would be dorky and nobody really cares what I'm reading at any given moment. So maybe I won't. PC Operating Systems will be studied, though. Now that we're into the XP stuff I can get more hands-on practice.
Wish me luck!

While I'm at it...
Tonight Graham and I were poking through the dollar DVDs at Wal-Mart when we noticed some anime-looking robot stuff. Graham picked up all three, but the only one he immediately recognized from the package stills was one called "Defenders of Space". It's a Korean show from 1987 originally called Phoenix King, and it's mostly a pretty run-of-the-mill cheap-ass magic robot anime. Except for one thing: The titular big magic giant robot is G1 Inferno! He's clearly, unquestionably G1 Inferno with a big black phoenix logo below his windows. Also, the bad guys' ship is a garish redeco of Gundam's White Base, and all the bad guys are wearing Zeon uniforms. I'll try to fit some screen caps into my schedule in the next couple days, but if you're Transformers-inclined, it's definitely worth the dollar to see MAGIC SUPER INFERNO SAVES EVERYONE!

Busy.
Went to see Ben Lee/Ben Folds/Rufus Wainright concert. Went to Ohio State Fair. Turned in paper for English class. Been busy.
I don't think I'm likely to sell anything on eBay again. I just finished selling off one of my cameras (no, Chip, not yours) and for all the effort I put into my friendly, personal auction, in the end it was won by some guy who clearly runs a store and, despite my auction specifically stating that I AM NOT A CAREER SELLER and THIS IS MY ONLY AUCTION, the fucker STILL e-mailed me to ask what other photo equipment I had for sale. And I told him, this was just something I had lying around that I never really liked much, and I wasn't selling anything else, and no offense but I had hoped it wasn't going to be bought by someone who was just going to resell it again. Stupid fucking career dealers have pretty much ruined eBay and through it the collectable market anyway. You can't bid on something early for risk of another dealer jumping in and buying it because there must be Demand if you're bidding on it, and then they drive up the prices by relisting it higher. I'm sure there are Transformers on there that have just gone from one dealer to another over the past couple years. It's just gotten disgusting, and I'm about through with it.

Oh yeah...
Also also, I have put together a logo for the BotCon zine.
I'll ideally have a web site up for it by the end of the weekend, not for content but just for submission guidelines and contact info. I've already had a decent bit of interest - too much and I wouldn't be able to pay for it out of pocket - and I've made some very advantageous printing arrangements with friends, so it looks like everything's on track.

I = Awesome
I was gonna take a photo of the 104% I got on my midterm, but the instructor wanted them back...
(Everybody got 4 extra points so we could get two questions wrong, but I didn't need them! ;) )

Gngh.
Every time I consider skipping English class for some reason, like because I couldn't get to sleep the night before and have a midterm in my other class and I'm pretty certain English will be a total and complete waste of my time, English class turns out to be a total and complete waste of my time and I wind up regretting bothering. I'm too Hermione for my own damn good.

Guess I'll make it official...
Never one to whine without taking action, I decided today to do my own little part to promote the fan aspect of the fandom at BotCon by throwing together a freebie zine for the show. I've started threads on it in the art forum and the fanfic forum over at the Allspark, and so far at least a few people seem pretty enthusiastic. Which is good, too many people and I'd have to start judging, and part of the point is not to judge. It's not like I have to get people worked up to buy a free zine. :) So, uh, anybody else wanna contribute an essay or a short story or a pinup or a crayon scribble, drop me a line by September 9.

Eeeeeeek...
Tomorrow morning's probably the first midterm I've felt really nervous about since going back to school. It's in PC Operating Systems, and yeah, a lot of it is stuff I know, but it's also a lot of memorization of stuff I can't really put my hands on because I don't have a ratty old computer to install Windows 98 on over and over. I don't feel completely lost, because I realized that a lot of stuff from the beginning of class has finally sunken in (the three files that comprise the base of MSDOS, a lot of the DOS commands, stuff about how NT sucks), but a lot of the more recent stuff hasn't had time to yet. I've been spending the hour and 15 minutes between classes in the fitness center on an exercise bike this quarter, but I think I'll be spending it in a nice quiet corner of Davidson Hall tomorrow. Or maybe I'll splurge and have a breakfast of dubious nutritional value at the cafeteria so my stomach doesn't interrupt my concentration. I just wish the apartment would cool down enough for me to be able to study here. My head feels kinda baked.

Fuck The Man.
Lovely. All this getting up early for work on the days when I'm not getting up even earlier for classes apparently results in waking up at quarter to seven and not being able to get back to sleep.
So now I'm going to pester you about what's keeping me awake. Yes, this actually keeps me awake, apparently, because I have such an emotional investment in it, and because now I can't get back to sleep. And so I want you to go read WilWheaton.Net's entry for August 28, 2002 on his experiences with Star Trek's for-profit conventions. Yeah, a lot of it's his personal stuff, but there's an overall view of the business of it - and how the shift to for-profit only ever helps the people who take over the convention. It just sickens me, literally physically makes my stomach churn, to think of our little fandom getting pounced upon by outsiders like a moth in a web. Yeah, I know it's about the pinnacle of geeky, and not even the good kind, to get so worked up about something like this. When you go to the same fan-run event designed to (ideally) earn just enough to maintain itself and give the fans as much of the benefit as possible for 10 years and then it gets taken over by The Man, you come tell me how you feel about it.
Actually, I suppose it's not too different from how I felt when WHFS went corporate, so there you go. And you know what? Now they're a Spanish station.
